What’s on My Bookshelf? #CREATIVETHOUGHTS

(piano music) – Hey guys, it’s Roberto. So due to my incessant insomnia, you guys are getting a late
night creative thoughts vlog at 3:00 a.m. in the morning. Insomnia really sucks but the upside is that you guys get more content. So tonight I thought we’d
take a little look at what’s on my bookshelf and why. This is a video that a
lot of you had asked for. So I’m gonna kind of run through some of my favorite
books on this bookshelf and maybe if you guys ask me really nicely about which ones you want, I will do some book reviews or a top five or top 10 book list. So let me know which books you’d like me to talk about
in the comments section and we’ll see if I could put
something together for you. Oh, little-known fun fact, this is two bookshelves and they are cheapo
bookshelves from Walmart. My fancy more perfect, beautiful, minimalist IKEA bookshelf just arrived and I will probably spend
the remainder of the night assembling it after this vlog. Two of my favorite books on this bookshelf are Steal Like an Artist
and Show Your Work. Both of these are by Austin Kleon and they are amazing. These two books, if you are a creative person, if you are a content person
from the land of social media, if you are an artist, these books will change your life. This book will get you
out of your own head. This book will stop with
some of the procrastination. This book will stop
with some of the vanity that makes you dare to think that you’ve come up with
something under the sun that no one else has ever before, ever in the history of humanity. This book will kill that
vanity and ego for you, at least I hope so. This book will end the paranoia and make you stop holding
your cards close to the chest, make you stop keeping
your ideas in your head or leaving them in a notebook to die and will help you put
them out into the world, bring them to life and give them the
attention that they deserve and will also help you
bring value to other people. It will help you put work out that you’re willing to stand by. I really believe in this book. It is one of my favorites. Austin is not writing me a check. This is #NotSponsored. This is not a plug. Austin, got your back. No, this book is amazing. This book will change how you think about your
work and your creativity, at least I hope so. What I believe the value of this book is, is that it will make
you respect the process at least a little bit more rather than just the
result and the byproduct. That’s kind of what I got out of it. So I’m hoping that’s
what you guys get too. One of the things I really love is when my friends write books and they make it onto this bookshelf. This is one of those books. My friend, Amy Schmittauer, is amazing. You guys probably know who she is if you’ve watched this channel. She is the host of a
YouTube show and channel called Savvy Sexy Social and it is probably one
of the best places to go if you wanna learn about
how to vlog like a boss. Amy is an old-school YouTube vlogger and it’s actually how she
built a strong consultancy, grew that to a six-figure business and left behind a very comfortable corporate kind of career in order to do something fun and amazing. And that’s what most of
you probably want to do. So if you wanna figure that out, this is the book that can help you do it. Amy, my sponsorship
check’s in the mail, right? Guys, I need sponsors ’cause, YouTube is dying and all that jazz, right? So hook me up. For my fellow designers,
creatives, and art nerds, I’ve got a treat. Book of Ideas. Book of Ideas is just what it sounds like. This is by Radim Malinic and he’s actually one of my favorite creative directors of all time. Yes, I’m enough of a graphic designer that I have a favorite creative director. Get over it. I also have a favorite
motion graphic designer. I also have a favorite typographer. Yes, I know, I know. If you’re looking for
creative inspiration, grab this book. Speaking of inspiration, my friends at Adobe sent
me a present a year ago or was it two years ago? I forget. Time flies. Super-Modified by Behance and this is a collection
of Behance creative work. This is one of the
thickest books on the shelf but it is also one of the best, if you are a creative person. The work in here is amazing. Behance artists are some
of the best in the world. If you ever are having a creative block, you need to go to the Behance website and just check out some
of the amazing cool things people are doing in every
category of artwork. This book is what I turn to whenever I’m remotely inkling the idea that I might be heading
for a creative block, writer’s block, artist’s block, whatever. (loud tapping) This gets it done. It solves that problem just like that. This is a book that’s
also written by a friend and I happen to be featured in this book. It’s called Your One Word. Can you guess what my one word is? Betcha you can. So this book is by my good
friend, Evan Carmichael. Evan is one of the most amazing
entrepreneurs on the planet. His entire channel is
dedicated to entrepreneurship with literally thousands of videos that I think every
entrepreneur can benefit from. And this book is very similar to that, in the fact that he interviewed many successful entrepreneurs, including yours truly, and told some of their stories and process in this book. And so he encourages you
to find your one word and build your business
and your brand around that. His one word is believe and I bet you guys know
what my one word is. So definitely check out this book, guys. And also, I will be linking to, oh, I don’t know, the top 100 books on this bookshelf in the description down below. So if you’re interested in that, you should definitely check it out. Obviously I don’t think that, at least not right now, despite the insomnia, that I can cover every
single book on this shelf but these are just some of the highlights. I thought you guys would
get a kick out of it. I think you would get a kick
out of Late Night Roberto. Late Night Roberto is
surprisingly safe for work. That’s disappointing, right? Anyway, I hope you guys
enjoyed a little bit of what’s on my bookshelf. Definitely check out the books linked down in the description. It’s a list of my 100
favorites that are up here and also in my Kindle library. I’m also gonna link up
to my favorite audiobooks because in case you don’t have time for the print or the e-book, then maybe you’ll do like I do and you can listen to audiobooks all day while you crush it, get your work done, get your fitness in,
whatever it is you’re doing. I also listen to a lot of these when I’m traveling on the plane. This video not brought to you by Audible. Audible, sponsor me because Adpocalypse. Anyway, guys, would love
to know your thoughts. Question of the day, what are your favorite books? They don’t all have to be business books. What do you like? I actually, when I’m
not reading this stuff I read fantasy books all the time. I think some of my favorite stuff is Brandon Sanderson
with the Mistborn series and also Wheel of Time, when he picked up for Robert Jordan and also I like the Necromancer
series from Gail Z. Martin and obviously I like Game of
Thrones by George R.R. Martin and also probably my
favorite fantasy writer is David Gemmell. So now you guys know
one more thing about me. Anyway, what are your favorite books? That’s our question of the day. Let me know in the comment
section down below. Links to all mine, of course, are in the description. Like this video if you like it. Don’t forget to subscribe. Thanks for hanging out
with me on the late vlog. Shout out to Brett Conte and let me share my
creative thoughts with you because I can’t sleep right now. As always, you guys, thanks so very much for watching and don’t forget, create something awesome toda– Tonight? Today? Tonight, whatever. Alright, take care. Bye. (upbeat electronic music)

    Awesome! πŸ‘πŸ˜„
"How to stop worrying and start living", Dale Carnegie. It's very dated, but the principles are still relevant today.

I thought the creative part of me died when I grew up and got a job. Then years and years later I take a leap and post a video on YT – I now have so many ideas I cannot produce the content fast enough. The creativity never left, it was just buried under my day to day grind.

  10. Jay Cartere says:

David Gemmel Is AMAZING. Winter Warriors was one of the first fantasy books I read and one of the best!

  11. Big Blue says:

Roberto, it's 10 in the morning here. Time for coffee.

I'm up with you Roberto. I love business books, one of my favorite is Good to Great by Jim Collins. Such great content about leadership and truly caring about the work you do. I plan on reading Jab Jab Jab Right Hook and Your One Word in the near future. Favorite non business related book would have to be The Time Traveler's Wife.

  13. Samantha Melanie says:

Yes, loved Amy's book! Enjoyed hearing your late night thoughts too πŸ™‚ I'd love to see a top five or ten favourite marketing books (or other topics) video in the future! And I'm guessing your word was 'create!' πŸ˜„πŸ™Œ

Ok, I know Insomnia sucks – my partner had it and it affected also the rest of his day, mood etc. So I feel for everyone that has it.
Now what about the problem of not having an issue to fall asleep? Or better yet – having trouble staying up. Literally, I can fall asleep at any time of the day, in a minute. No problem. Really. No problem. πŸ™„
And I try to be a YouTuber – see what's the issue?πŸ€” As you said in couple of your videos – you need to stay up that extra hour if you want to make it happen.
Can you please have a meeting with my brain and let them know that? I tried everything – they're like shut down when it comes to staying awake. Hm..they're shut down a lot of the time actually. I have a problem.😊
Regarding the books – I get bored very quickly when I start to read. Specially in the last years. I think it has sth to do with YouTube. I just love videos and learning from you guys. πŸ˜‰
I did actually purchase 3 books in Italian as I'm learning the language. I read 3 pages. Yup, I'm awesome.😏

I have my own channel dedicated to producing ASMR videos. But check out ASMR Gibi, ASMR Sensei, and ASMR zeitgeist. Check it out and let me know if it works for you.

LMAO Late night Roberto is awesome. Thanks for this video man. A lot of my inspiration comes from books, so I'm always on the hunt for new good ones.

  44. Kim Here says:

Oh my gosh! A Booktube video from Roberto! A dream come true for a Booktuber such as myself!! LOVED THIS. Vlog Like a Boss was great. I call it "the greatest vlogging locker room pep talk you'll ever read". Late Night Roberto is awesome. I've been reading middle grade books this year, and I'm super into Fablehaven right now, and hoping to wrap up my re-read of Lord of the Rings this fall. Neil Gaiman is probably my "favorite". But it's difficult to give a favorite book or author!! It can't be done!

  45. MissAmyxo says:

I love the book "So Good They Can't Ignore You" by Cal Newport! Really good. Sorry you have insomnia… it's so rough. I definitely get a lot of that too. Hope you are able to sleep well soon!

  46. ProlificBanana says:

Right now my two favorite books are "Pretty Much Everything" by Aaron Draplin… so pretty.. love the cover and how it feels.. super well made. I really nerd out when I read it.. which is every day. The other book I really beat up quite a bit and has been a workhorse for the past few years for me is "Color Index" by Jim Krause. Super handy little book.

  47. Jordan Raven says:

If you like got and the wheel of time you will LOVE Steven Erickson's malazan empire series!

  48. Dqan says:

Can't think of a favorite book over all or even a favorite creative/business book, so I'll go with my favorite WWI history book: "A World Undone" by G. J. Meyer. Chapters are generally short, so it might be good for nights when one has insomnia.

  49. Jlfitnessmiami says:

"Steal Like An Artist" is a complete game changer. It took me just less than an hour to read it and i've read it several times. This book has totally changed the way I think and look at things. Of course you have it on your book shelf Roberto! You're the man~!

  50. Intertubes9000 says:

    Late night Roberto seems fun.

  51. 55Ramius says:

  67. Miss Jenny's Cleaning says:

LOL. If I did an insomnia video, my niche would have to change…Miss Jenny's Witching Hour. Maybe I can learn to fly on my broom or vacuum. It would definitely be scary.

On the other hand, I have been thinking about how you mention creativity in every single video, even one that is spontaneous. I have a company mission statement on all my signage. I really need to start putting it in my videos.

I love your videos. Get some rest.

  68. BNIBCD Creative Media says:

I just wanted to mention aΒ very small paper back that helped me to cope with some of the aspects of "Artists Complex", called "Art and Fear".

Big Hard Sex Criminals is my winning graphic novel of the century right now <3

  78. Jamaal Willis says:

    Indeed, I enjoyed the bookshelf!

  79. GlamMeriah says:

Also, thanks for pointing to Austin kleon's book!

  81. Prejippie says:

My all-time favorite book is Bird By Bird by Anne Lamotte. She is amazing and her advice to aspiring writers is like a rollercoaster ride. If you get time, this is a fun and cathartic read. (I have read it several times, because every few years I need a refresher.)

Thanks for sharing what's on your bookshelf!

  82. BigEasyPix says:

The Book of Ideas is no longer available on Amazon…any idea where else to get it?

  83. Everin James says:

Steal like an artist is a great book for generating creative ideas. I also have the steal like an artist journal and its just as helpful.

  84. Silvia Kay says:

I'm sorry to hear about your insomnia, but I really liked this video. I love books and I will definitely be checking out all of these!
I also love fantasy books. I still haven't read Mistborn though. My favorite fantasy books are LOTR and His Dark Materials.
