Turning a Paperback into an Artistic Hardcover Book – NO MUSIC

hi YouTube I’m Callum and in today’s
video I’m going to be taking a soft cover book in this case this is my copy
of Walden by Henry David Thoreau and I’m going to be changing it from a paper
back to a book with a hardcover and these are beautiful I’ve done this
before using cloth to find the or paper to do the lining but this one you get
this really really cool old almost Hollywood style effect so I’ve already
done one that I’ll show you example so I had this paperback Lisa techel is a
practical guide to the runes where’s the book it’s gone so I made this from it that’s beautiful
purple book it’s got this almost leather and kind of look to it open if you need
it you can get full extension access to all the information on the inside just a
book with hard cover and basically I found this technique online from a few
blogs and sort of extrapolated the details that I need it’s a very
versatile technique you use paper mache in this case I’m using paper towel
to create a thin and working veneer so basically you can build whenever you
want some card stock this case I did the rune here which I know is
backwards I glued it on in the wrong order upside down but you can do a lot
with this this is just one of the possibilities I wanted to try something
simple for the first one so I only did the detailing on in front not much on
the back but you do really end up with this kind of like old leathery sort of
look and depending on how you do the paint job what we do will be cover to a
largely to cool things so now that I know that it for sure works and it’s
really easy to do the imaging the books themselves and the other that we’re
thinking to cover off I thought it’d be fun to try with a book they do the whole
thing so we’re ready to begin I first I want
to make sure that I take this off in one piece
I want to use it and cover for anything say there might be a artists photo in the
back that you want to keep or something like that it’s not necessary to take it
off in one piece but it’s it gives you more options going forward area one
cover so now there’s probably going to be some harsh edges here with glue or
something that’s just something you can pretty easily clean up just to make it a
little bit easier when you’re actually going through with this I’m going to
bigger blade here very carefully okay so the next stage is you need to decide how
big to make your cover so basically you want to take the measurements of your
book so this one here is four inches and three sixteenths you can write that down
in three sixteenths you just measure the height of the page no there so I’m going
to call that six inches and 1416 okay so that’s the width and that’s the height
and now to the width you want to add how much do we want to add
one eight probably yeah so +18 and then to the height you need to basically add
one eats all around on these edges here so we’re gonna add a quarter and that’ll
give us the size that we need to cut out for our two front panels
okay so I’ve marked the measurements for the front and back covers onto the
cardstock here I’ve got a cutting board underneath so I cut out with a knife
I’ve extended the height mark out so that I can make a spine piece after I’ve
cut these two pieces out okay so I’ve cut out the front and back and it’s a
good idea if you can line them up and make sure that the front edges are
perfect with each other they don’t have to be perfectly straight they just have
to match up with each other that’s a hit there and so I’ve marked the two little
markings to show the top the ones that will face each other sort of when it’s
closed so how we get this measurement for the spine it’s pretty simple that
you measure across there and then you cut it out and that’ll be different for
everyone’s books because everyone’s books will be completely different sizes
and everything it’s a pretty you have to kind of tailor this process to each
books I didn’t make so unique this face here for room of communion and then
you’re just going to get your tape down now cloth tape would be best it would be
best if you put it in one big thing going straight down so basically this is
not cover and we’re going to be working with this cover we’re going to do a lot
to this before we do any paper mache or anything like that so the first decision
is what we’re going to do what design it is and the brilliant part about this is
that everything on here is getting covered plan so you can get a pencil and
you just draw ideas okay so I’ve come up with the cover design which I’m very
happy with we’re going to have a tree motif here in the middle in this big
circle Walden will be on a raised patch here and then that’ll be sort of printed
out and put placed on top this here is a raised portion of the spine that you
sometimes see in older books and that’ll become more clear as we go ahead with
this and then they’ll be these raised spirals so I’ve cut out lots of border
pieces out of the same cardstock that I built the main bit out of and they’re
all little toughie the same length they’re all the height of the book so I
picked up my four favorites the ones that have the straightest edge and
they’re gonna be the ones that will go along the length now you can use your
glue but I have bought some crafters tape which is like a roll-on adhesive
which is used in scrapbooking and it’s a great little thing but it is a little
mist so I’m going to do it on a scrap piece of paper and basically you just
roll this on like that with this stuff we’re just putting it in place it
doesn’t need to be super perfect but I mean as good a job as you can get so I’m
fine with this because I can pick this back up but once it’s like I can adjust
it now that we have the borders on the long edges the next step is pretty
simple you just take a piece that you want a little mark area right in there
okay so now that I have the borders in place I’ve created a circular ring here
and this is just done using a compass you could just trace something that
should be centered perfectly there so what I’m basically I’m going to do is
I’m going to erase this on the inside here and redraw it so that it fits
within the actual perfect circle okay so I’ve laid everything out I added the
boss raised part to the logo there and now I’ve got my glue and I’m going to punch there just like that okay so I’ve done my best to lay
everything out with the twine now it might not have been the most ideal thing
to use for this I did have to lose a lot of detail I’m a little worried to see
how this will turn out but at the same time it’s exciting and this style this
book really lends itself to things not being super accurate so that’s fortunate
in this case Anthony so I’m actually quite happy with the way it turned out
this is working pretty well it folds up pretty neatly and basically any bits
that are sticking up or anything they’re going to get covered once we do the
paper mache process so it can look as terrible as it likes the moment it’ll
all get sorted out later together and I’m just gonna do one of these to
show you basically the concept so right now I’m just building a border and I’ve
basically frame in the book so this is going to line along this edge and cover
that I’m nesting at the edges out of the way and then you can focus on doing the
front on the mean stuff I just have to cut the corners out so that when I fold
it over I’ll still look good in everything it really doesn’t have to go the non set of this border here because
we’re going to pressing it so to the main panel in preparation to that I’m
gonna put a bunch of glue just straight on to main bit that way I know that it
won’t get paper we’ll stick them to it and that the paper can get into all of
those little cracks in there that is one way I like the way to
dislodge these single diction you could do a more traditional chain where you
tear it up to two very very small a lot of options and off depends on how
laborat you want to make this thing so now that we have it on I’m going to wet
it directly some of the shapes will start to come in one more left and I’m
just going to take it straight over the edge with the phone and this is just
going to be for the spa is pretty important so I’ve tried to cut it close
so it doesn’t go over the image too much rifle and over on one side working your
way so for painting I’m gonna start off with
a light brown now I got this brown by mixing these three paints from orange
and cream and you wanted to do the lightest color first this is what the
basic of the the end it’ll sort of not be quite the highlights but the lighter
color and then basically the devalues the parts in between the raised beds
will be painted with the second lie and if just done some touch-ups where I miss
dovely pieces mix together some dark brown eggs and that’s just the same
ground they used to make this one plus some black later so I need some more
than we do quite a bit but basically all I’m gonna do is I’m going to fill in the
pockets fill in the valleys in here so I’m going to avoid putting paint
anywhere which is raised so just gonna lift this up with my fingers so there’s
another circle here so I’m going to go right up to the edge and paint it and
then I know that there’s this this trough here and I’m going to sort of
blend in that I’m not gonna use I’m going to use a pretty dry brush but to
dry and this is why the details no matter too much
oh Jesus right here for getting like it precisely here because
you can kind of paint in the edges where you wanted to sort of show more relief okay so this has been drying for a while
and with sort of paints that I’m using into my level of ability with the
paintbrush this is about as good as I can get it and I like the way this looks
but I still think that there needs to be some more detail so I’m going to go at
it with a color pencil then these you just get a little bit more control a
little bit more finer detail and I can bring out more of these shapes so really
I just kind of want to do the edges or there’s a hard edge I don’t need to
color much more than that something like that and sort of blend it
with your finger and then already that section there is looking quite a bit
better and this will be really helpful for these bits stand out here okay so I
finished with the colored pencils the design stand out quite a bit now they
look a lot more separate from the background I also wrote the title on the
spine they’re pretty happy with the way that this is looking it’s time to
basically find it to the the book itself one thing I did notice as though that
this tape was a mistake I definitely use too much of it you can hear that when it
opens the closet it definitely would be a better choice okay so I have added a
bit of tape along the spine here that’s just because this first page that I was
concerned about coming out was starting to come off on the edge so I just put a
piece of masking paper there in order to secure that
but the next step is to add headbands and these are small bits of cloth which
go on the top like so now you can make these you can do some machine you can
dip a hand if you can find an old hardback which has falling apart and
just ribbon so as long as that hook is larger or the same size basically that’s
the book that you’re amazing they’re good to go so they just want to hook up
over the top you see in the back of the book pretty much just a decorative thing
now I can just trim them off and we’re going to okay so the next step is to
line up your book within your cover and I have cut out pieces of paper to the
same length as my book there are quite a bit longer though and that’s because
we’re going to need to spend some time line on this stuff up so basically the
first step is to get it where you want and then you’re going to glue it to this
fine here now there’s a couple things if you use for that clue I’m going to use
the roll-on adhesive again I’m just going to roll it over a couple reasons
why I’m going to be using this glue for these sort of applications here and
that’s because it’s not going to interfere with the paper sometimes if
you do this with wet glue it doesn’t look so good but that would probably
give you a stronger no mark here and that’ll tell me where I
need to cut no that’s cut we’re gonna have to attach our signatures into the
board so if I just were to do it like this I’d probably end up asleep here I
mean it’s pretty much going to do you line up your signatures your block here
and then you glue it in now you want to leave a little bit of room here so I’m
gonna put my glue probably about this far back and then for the rest of it
it’s going to go straight against you right where I want it it’s just moving
up the edges and you’ll know if it works or not if you can built in this book now
one thing I forgot to mention if you want to leave a little bit of overhang
going back past these signatures so I don’t have done quite a good job of that
otherwise it would be too much so I’ll try and do a little bit more in the back
you just repeat but this basically repeat that process with the back and
you’ll have a little so you will click on the back for a minute
so you want to leave a little bit of a gap room so maybe you can put a ruler in
here when you’re making that fold and I don’t give you that a little bit of a
gap and that’s just to give the binding a little bit more freedom of movement so
I’m adding in this little clip after I’ve actually finished making the book
because that’s about to film the part where I glue the spine that’s pretty
important it doesn’t work so well when you have really large thick books to
have these sort of hard backs and have them down because the entire thing needs
to bend so it’s a choice whether you need to do that but if you’re finding
that you that when you open the book this that’s coming out too much you can
always seal this off if you use that sort of adhesive a little bit and add
the glue running down the center of the spine which is provided so I’ve given
the book enough time for all the glue to dry and we have a finished product to
change the color of the writing on there so it was a little bit more easy to read
the title and of course it’s fully approval readable see the headbands when you’re
looking at it and that hides sort of the ugliness down the spine there and I just
wanted to end by sort of showing you the two ones that I agree now this one I use
yummy organic shapes I’m they’re less crisp where is this one everything’s cut
out and angular you get a very different look
I used detoxing the printouts for the titles for this one and then this one I
just decided that I’m just gonna write it on on on the spine you get different
looks depending on on how you approach the book binding and there’s very very
much that you can do with these you can do so much more than just these two
examples now I did get inspired for making these from a specific blog post
that I’ll link down below and that I’ll post a link to a bunch of other blog
posts of people who have done this so I’m actually going to take all of those
links and put them down below and that will give you guys lots of inspiration
for making these one of them used like Halloween decorations so they really
raised up things other people one of the blog posts you me if I can medusa head
that goes on on the top of the book and it’s it and like super three-dimensional
there’s so much you guys that is possible with this then just using the
techniques that I use here basically this is the this is an outline for how
the basic structures the basic technique works but it’s really only up to you
guys to use as much imagination as creativity as you can to create really
interesting and unique books of art that will turn your libraries into something
truly special so thank you guys so much for watching this video hopefully I’ll
be back with something similar in the near future thanks so much for watching
bye
