Hey, YouTube! It’s Zoë or readbyzoe and today I am really excited to talk to you all about a new book club I’m starting, Austentatious. This is the graphic that I made last night, which is not too shabby for me being terrible at graphic design. In this book club, we will be trying to read a Jane Austen book a month, starting next month, August 2016. That is in a couple of days, so you have those days to go out and get the book of the month which is…drumroll, please. *beating of poor chair* It’s “Pride and Prejudice,” obviously. I mean, what else would we start with? Obviously, we have to start with my favorite book of all time. Gotta start with a bang! I have read this book so many times that I’m starting to lose track. I just read it a couple of months ago, and I think this time in August is going to be my fourth or fifth or sixth time reading this book? I don’t even remember, but the thing is, it gets better every single time. Since Jane Austen only published six full-sized novels, this is going to be a six-month book club, starting next month, August 2016, and going until January 2017. 2017, that sounds so weird. I’ll give you the order in which I’m going to read them right now so that you can prepare. August is “Pride and Prejudice.” September is “Persuasion,” which I haven’t read yet. So I’m really excited to read it, because I’ve heard amazing things. Obviously, because it’s Jane Austen. October is “Northanger Abbey,” which I picked because Halloween and “Northanger Abbey” talks about Gothic novels and it’s kind of creepy in some parts. So, I thought it worked. November is “Emma,” which is going to be my third time reading “Emma”, I think. I love “Emma.” December is “Mansfield Park,” which I also haven’t read yet. We are going to end in January with “Sense and Sensibility.” Although, depending on how we like this book club and how it all works out, I may continue on with some more classics, like Dickens or the Brontë sisters, possibly. Also, an added bonus of this being a classics book club, is that you can find all of these books for either pretty darn cheap or completely free. I know every single library should have at least a copy of “Pride and Prejudice,” and most likely the other books as well. And you can find it online at Project Gutenberg. Or, if you’re like me and awful, you can find the prettiest editions that you can and spend your money on them. But, they’re so pretty. This one has pictures in it as well. That’s why I’m excited to read “Pride and Prejudice,” because I get to read a picture book and people won’t make fun of me. In addition to wanting to start this book club because of my deep love and appreciation for Jane Austen, I really wanted to do this to try and make reading classics enjoyable. One of the reasons why a lot of people don’t gravitate towards authors like Jane Austen is because they have been scarred by years of required reading in school, where they’re only reading, or Sparknoting, it because they want to get a good grade on a test or paper. They’re not actually reading it for fun. They’re not enjoying the words that they’re reading, they’re just getting through them to know what the basic plot is and what the metaphors are and blah blah blah. Personally, I first read Jane Austen in 10th grade. I was assigned “Pride & Prejudice” for an English class project, and, although I thought it was good, I didn’t see what all the fuss was about. I was one of those people who just read it for the plot and so I could get a good grade. It wasn’t until I read it a couple of years later, I think it was my senior year of high school, that I really enjoyed it and then it became my favorite book. Reading a book for school sucks all of the fun out of it, which is especially awful in this case, because Jane Austen is such a hilarious author. And a lot of people don’t think about that, because they’re reading it for school and it’s not funny when it’s for school. For this book club, I made a group on Goodreads where I will be hosting discussions of the book that we are reading for that month, and where we can all chat to one another and make some friends, talk about Jane Austen and our lives. I don’t know, I want to make some friends. Also, I will be doing a review of each book of the month here on my channel, so you can watch all of those videos even if you aren’t actively participating in the book club. I also think it would be really fun if we did movie nights, where we watch our book of the month’s movie adaptation. I’d live tweet it on Twitter and we can all chat about how beautiful JJ Feild is and all of the versions of Mr. Darcy. Ahhh. Mmm. I think that’d be a lot of fun. Also, if you aren’t a fan of “girly” things and you think that this is going to be a super “girly” club where we read super “girly” books and just…be super “girly”? I don’t know. I’m gonna shut you down right there, because Jane Austen is not “super girly.” I know there are romances in all of her books, but she is so witty. Everybody, I think, can find something great about Jane Austen. At least, that’s my opinion, because I love her so much. So don’t be afraid to join this club, no matter who you are. If your schedule doesn’t permit you reading with me every single month or you can’t or don’t want to read the same Austen book I’m reading that month, don’t sweat it. Like I said, I want to make this as enjoyable as possible. This is not required reading. This is not school, there will be no test at the end of this six-month period. It’s just reading books for fun. So, if this sounds like something that you’d like to do, feel free to join the Goodreads group. Also, if you want to, you can follow me on social media, since I’ll be posting my reading updates on there as well. All of the links are down below. Also, let me know in the comments section if you are going to join. I am so pumped to start this and discuss Jane Austen both with people who are more acquainted with Jane Austen than I am, since I haven’t read all of the books, and with people who haven’t read any Jane Austen, not even a word. They don’t even know any of the books. Are there people out there that don’t know any Jane Austen? I think everybody knows “Pride and Prejudice,” because…duh? Also, this’ll give me another excuse to watch “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Emma Approved” again. Yes, please! I need more of that. Well, that’s all I wanted to say today. Thank you all so much for watching, and I’ll talk to you all soon in my next video. Bye!
